Distinguished and Famous people from Mallala District
🏁 Clem Smith
Clem Smith helped bring Mallala’s motor-racing circuit back into use after a period of closure. He bought the venue in the 1970s and, after years of work and legal difficulties, obtained a licence for racing to resume in 1982. A car dealer and former racer, he reinvested in the circuit and spent much of his week working there. After his death in 2017, a chair placed at his preferred viewing spot provided a modest local memorial.
🌟 Lex Davison
Lex Davison won the 1961 Australian Grand Prix at Mallala in a Cooper T51 powered by a Coventry Climax engine. It was his fourth and final victory in the event, held at only the new circuit’s second meeting. The track had been developed on the former RAAF base after Port Wakefield was judged unsuitable for the Grand Prix. His result places the town within an important chapter of Australian motor racing before the later Formula One era of the Grand Prix.
